bpas

History

bpas was established as a registered charity in 1968 to provide a safe, legal abortion service.

bpas - providing reproductive choice since 1968

Choosing bpas means benefitting from over 40 years of experience.

When bpas was formed, shortly after abortion was legalised in Britain, the National Health Service was unable to provide abortion care for all who needed it. NHS abortion services remain limited and so bpas continues to provide affordable, high quality care for those who cannot, or choose not to, access the NHS.

Today, bpas collaborates closely with the NHS and provides a range of reproductive health care services, free of cost to the user, on behalf of the NHS where local arrangements allow.

bpas currently provides abortion care on behalf of more than 107 primary care organisations and is responsible for 50% of NHS-funded abortions undertaken by specialist agencies. bpas is licensed by the Department of Health and inspected by the Care Quality Commission.

Apart from providing high quality services, bpas is committed to education, research and the development of good practice.

Over time, bpas has also developed an important role in providing accurate, up-to-date information and informed comment on unwanted pregnancy to:
