Counselling
At bpas we accept that unplanned pregnancies happen and that every woman should have the right to decide for herself how to deal with the situation. bpas has been established since 1968 and helps over 70,000 women every year. You can make an appointment at bpas to talk things through in person with a member of our counselling staff and discuss the options available to you. Our staff are fully trained and have chosen to work with bpas to provide a caring service. To make an appointment please call 08457 30 40 30
bpas’ consultation centres are registered with the Department of Health and are monitored with regular inspection visits. Visit the Department of Health's website which lists bpas' registered consultation centres.
bpas is also a memeber of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy who regulate counselling and psychotherapy in the UK.
Counselling can be an important part of the process when you are deciding what to do about an unplanned pregnancy. Our unique approach to counselling enables you to discuss your options in a friendly and supportive environment and helps you to make the decision that is right for you. To make an appointment please call 08457 30 40 30
Counselling is part of the initial consultation at bpas during which you will also have a medical screening so that we can asses your stage of pregnancy and medical history to find out which methods of abortion are most suitable for you. For more information on what to expect at your consultation.
Please be aware that some organisations advertising free pregnancy testing and counselling on the internet and in phone books are strongly opposed to abortion. They will not discuss all the options available to you in an unbiased way. If they talk about abortion as an option for you at all, it may involve unevidenced or untrue claims, or statistics that are not reliable. They may not provide you with any information on how to access abortion treatment.
Before you make any pregnancy counseling appointments, we would recommend that you ask the organisation whether they will be able to refer you for abortion treatment if you decide on that option. There is a list of registered Pregnancy Advice Bureaux on the Department of Health’s website. These have all met the Department of Health’s required standards on accurate and balanced information-giving, because they refer for abortion. Click here to view the list of registered Pregnancy Advice Bureaux, which includes bpas centres. Although there are other reputable organisations that are not included on this list, it’s a good place to search for impartial pregnancy counselling.
After an abortion
Each woman will experience different feelings after an abortion and will cope in different ways. If you feel that it might help you to talk with one of our counsellors, at any time after the abortion, bpas provides nationwide post abortion counselling through its network of consultation centres. To find your nearest centre, or to book an appointment, please call 08457 30 40 30
Phone lines are open from:
8am to 9pm Monday - Friday
8.30am to 6pm on Saturday
9.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday
If you live or work in London, we have a dedicated phone line to book post abortion counselling appointments. Please call: 0845 365 4321
Phone lines are open between 9.30am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday
The service is free to bpas clients. For women who have had an abortion elsewhere there is a fee of £65 for up to 3 sessions.
Appointments are available 6 days a week
You might also see post-abortion support advertised on the internet and in phone books. Some of these ‘support’ services are aimed at promoting the view of an organisation, rather than helping you within your own situation. We recommend that you approach an organisation on the Department of Health list or your GP for advice on getting the most appropriate source of support in your area.
